Five economic reasons to say no to more corporate tax cuts | Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives
The corporate tax policy is, in my opinion, going to play a big role in elections in 2011. The federal Conservative's policy of reducing these taxes
(a policy that isn't new to the Conservative government, as Jack Mintz notes) was so passionate that in 2008 we saw our federal finance minister bullying Ontario's Liberal government into adopting the same strategy.
While Ontario's 2009 budget is most notable for the HST, the 600,000 jobs the Liberal government claims experts estimated would result from that budget referred to figures from Mr. Mintz. Roger Martin in Ontario also noted positive job creation from that budget - and both Mintz and Martin were also critical of the first budget presented by McGuinty's first finance minister Sorbara.
And Ontario did proceed to have little growth - significantly trailing the county - after raising corporate taxes back in 2003-04.
I don't have an opinion on the tax cuts to share, but I do have an opinion on the Liberal brand in Ontario.
It will be hurt by the federal Liberals campaigning against the provincial Liberal government's policy.
