Ontario electricity rates going up - Ottawa - CBC News:
"In 2010, the government warned that hydro bills would jump 46 per cent over five years and green energy would be responsible for 56 per cent of that increase. It's not another 'thing', it's another 'THINK" ... for most people
Nuclear power is another reason why hydro rates are going up, according to the New Democrats.
Consumers who are still paying for Ontario's last nuclear build will see prices go up again when the government moves ahead with its $26-billion plan to refurbish its aging nuclear fleet, said NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.
"If people think that we're refurbishing Darlington for free, then they have another thing coming," she said.
The cost of new builds is not charged until they enter service, and no refurbished units will enter service over the next 5 years aside from the Bruce A units which are pending - the contracts for which were reviewed by the Auditor General shortly after they were signed, and which won't result in purchasing supply significantly above the cost.
They have nothing to do with the rate increases, aside from their existence in an increasingly inflexible, and unpredictable, supply mix.
Consumers are paying 0.7 cents/kWh to service old debt, much of it from nuclear builds.
They are paying well over 7 cents/kWh while paying suppliers of nuclear power (the majority of which is from OPG), 5.7 cents/kWh.
It takes a really deep 'thinger' to make 6.4 greater than 7.4.
